Bane made his animated debut in the self-titled episode of Batman: The Animated Series (also known as The Adventures of Batman & Robin). The episode aired on September 10, 1994.
Origin and portrayal
Bane was a chemically-enhanced assassin hired by Rupert Thorne to eliminate Batman.
He was a former inmate of a Cuban prison where he was subjected to experiments involving the super-steroid Venom, which gave him superhuman strength and endurance.
Bane is depicted as a cunning strategist with a fascination for Batman and an ambition to defeat him.
He also aims to usurp Thorne's criminal empire with the help of Thorne's assistant, Candice.
Confrontation with Batman
Bane showcases his power by effortlessly defeating Killer Croc and destroying the Batmobile with his bare hands.
He kidnaps Robin to draw Batman into a confrontation.
During their fight, Batman manages to defeat Bane by jamming a Batarang into his Venom delivery system, causing an overdose.
Batman then removes the tube, stopping the Venom flow just before Bane suffers a fatal heart attack.
Batman returns the defeated and unmasked Bane to Rupert Thorne, revealing Bane and Candice's plot against him.
Behind the scenes
The show's creators were initially reluctant to use Bane, finding him too "gimmicky".
They felt his comic book portrayal lacked depth beyond breaking Batman's back.
Henry Silva provided the voice for Bane, utilizing a thick Latin American accent in his initial appearance which he later softened.
The episode paid homage to the comic book storyline where Bane famously breaks Batman's back, particularly during the climax of the episode.
Later appearances
Bane made appearances in other DC Animated Universe productions, including Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, and Batman Beyond, though never as the central villain again.
His later appearances sometimes explored his Venom addiction and its consequences.
