Banjo-Kazooie Playthrough Part 2

It’s easy to dismiss Banjo-Kazooie as just another Mario 64 rip-off. The game certainly does take inspiration from the influential 1996 platformer, but it does do enough of its own to give it an identity. This is seen with its rather playful side with how the characters (especially Kazooie) interact with others. The worlds are mostly interesting with plenty of interesting secrets and challenges throughout. The challenges to get the jiggy pieces are mostly varied with a mix of obstacles, puzzles and exploring required to get all 100 of them. Banjo and Kazooie, from a platforming standpoint, have some interesting moves and the ones you learn from Bottles are utilized quite well throughout the game.
The worlds themselves are a bit of a mixed bag. Of the nine you play through (10 if you count Gruntilda’s lair) most of them are quite good and full of interesting development. Clanker’s Cavern is the only real misfire and that’s because the swimming mechanics aren’t very good. The camera is also a problem at times, particularly underwater, and that can lead to some unfortunate mishaps. Overall, though, Banjo-Kazooie is a real winner and has some superb game design and enough charming whimsy to keep the gamer going without feeling overwhelmed. N64 or Xbox Live Arcade version will give you the same great experience and it’s held up very well, which has not always been the case for early 3D platformers.
