Banner Saga Chapter 9.1- Cast the Hone into the Air: Proving Dominance (Hard/No Injuries)
Welcome to the Ravens caravan. I have several new units but also a good handful of returning characters- Ekkill, Krumr, Mogun and Bersi have defected and will be with the Ravens for the rest of the game. Mogun and Bersi won't see much play but Ekkill and Krumr will be mainstays of the group- not surprising since they were on my main team in BS1 as well. The Ravens chapters are really hard if you have no trained BS1 units, but having Ekkill and Krumr around will soften the difficulty curve.
This map is a mutiny from Mogun. Losing Mogun doesn't make much difference to the team comp since I wasn't using Mogun. I'm so hard up for units that Bersi sees deployment. I found it a relatively difficult map since human enemies are dangerous and I haven't had time to fully level Bolverk yet.
New characters!
Bolverk is the most important character in the Ravens caravan and one of the strongest units in the game. Bolverk has mediocre stats for a varl but makes up for it because he attacks twice- after his regular attack, he makes a strength attack on a random adjacent target, friend or foe. Bolverk also has an incredible special, Cull the Weak, which allows him to move again immediately if he kills using the special. Banner Saga is a game where you're encouraged to cripple enemies and then mop them up- this is a skill that lets you skip the entire mop-up phase of the battle. You have to be careful when positioning Bolverk since his extra attack can hurt allies, but it's for sure worth the effort.
Folka is good for three reasons. Her stats are great. She has an excellent passive that turns str damage taken into armor damage until she runs out of armor. She is also the only unit Bolverk will never attack with his random second hit- this makes positioning a lot easier. Her active skill is useful for damage mitigation for a while but it's ultimately not that good. I think I'm maybe more down on Folka than most people- she's good because the Ravens caravan have limited options, she's not top tier.
Sparr is another bard like Aleo, he won't be used except when he's force deployed (annoyingly he gets a lot of force deployments). His active skill is like a reversed version of Krumr's, he sends a target enemy to the back of the action queue- this is occasionally useful but it's situational and I'd say it's not really worth an action
