After Hiero II of Syracuse interrupted his siege at the city of Messana, Carthage and Mamertines signed a treaty. Carthage garrisoned with it's forces the city, but the Mamertines were dissatisfied.
The Mamertine, who were former mercenaries of Syracuse, went to Rome and asked for their help. Doubt flooded Rome, but with the consul Appius Claudius Caudex persuation, the senate accepted the help. The Mamertines expelled the Carthagenians and welcomes Rome. Carthage on the otherhand wanted to fight and cameback with an army of hoplites and mercenaries from it's republic. Hiero made allience with Carthage and so they quickly marched to Messana. Rome after knowing about this, they battled with the Syracusan army and the Carthagenian army.
This event took outside the city of Messana.
9000 legionaries with it's Mamertines allies were protected by 500 Cavalries. Carthage and Syracuse was advancing with 12000 soldiers.
Rome and Syracuse clashed the first day and made Hiero II decide to retreat, leaving his ally. The next day Carthage and Rome fought and it was the decisive battle for the owner of the City. With this ,the roman republic ruled the toe of italy and the strait of Messana. This Battle was the first battle of the First Punic war.
