Battle of the Ports - Scuba Dive (Durell Software) #zxspectrum #spectrumgames #commodore #oric #c64
Durell Software Ltd. Though not nearly as prolific as other software houses of the 1980's, Durell Software has developed some great games.
Based in Taunton, Somerset in the United Kingdom. DURELL Software Limited began life in February 1983, when Robert White plonked a 48K Oric and an Epson printer on his desk and began writing home computer software. While the Oric has not proved to be a runaway success story, Durell done a pretty good job.
Infact Durell Software developed 19 games for across various 8-bit computers such as the Oric-1, ZX Spectrum, C64, BBC Micro, Acorn Electron and Amstrad CPC.
The two main programmers were Mike Richardson and Clive Townsend and their biggest hit was Harrier Attack that sold over 250,000 copies. I also own the Oric version of Harrier Attack and I have to say I played it for hours and hours. I also remember it coming out at the time of the Falkland conflict where these Sea Harriers had played a major role. I also done a game review on Harrier Attack for the Oric. It's certainly one of my earlier videos but it's still worth checking out. I will leave the link to my video at the end of this video.
Anyway, there was another interesting game that Durell developed which also brings back very fond childhood memories and that game is Scuba Dive and that's the game I want to talk about today. For me this is one of the true classics from the golden era of 80s home computer gaming which must not be forgotten alongside the software house and all programmers that were involved in making this game.
Scuba Dive is a collect' em up game which was released on the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 in 1983 and then for the Oric-1 in 1984.
The game was written by Mike A Richardson, Ron Jeffs & Tim Hayward.
The artist was Tim Stamper.
It's interesting but all 3 versions are different from each other. Particularly the Commodore 64 but I get to that in a moment.
Let's start by looking at the ZX Spectrum game and then the Commodore 64 and finally the Oric version. I will give my overall thoughts of the game and which port is considered the best.
So let's dive into the game and start with the ZX Spectrum game.
