I forgot to answer the question because I am such a loudmouth. The answer is, I like putting peasants on Ctrl because its on a neutral finger reach from my index finger and its out of the way. Misclicking it during battle is not a possibility. 1-3 is usually for battle units, 4 is for heroes. But it may change from time to time.
