Footage of one of Battle Tryst's secret characters, Elein. Read this description for a bunch of additional information!

Battle Tryst was a 1998 Arcade game from Konami. It ran on Konami's own version of Panasonic's M2 hardware, and as such was never ported due to the console version of the M2 being cancelled, along with other factors. The game is extremely rare, and if you've paid attention to this channel's uploads recently, you'll know I love obscure arcade guff. And it doesn't get much more obscure than this!

Battle Tryst features several hidden characters - most notably Pastel from the Twinbee series, and Elaine (mispelled here as Elein) from Konami's pretty cool looking arcade Action RPG, Gaiapolis. The catch is that, like Kuhn in Fighting Vipers 2, the arcade machine needs to have run up a certain number of hours to unlock these characters.

...or at least that should be the case, but you can actually unlock them using the Dip Switch options in MAME! As such, this is possibly the first footage of Elaine being played as, let alone in decent quality, on the internet! There's footage of Pastel fighting her on NicoVideo (it looks like she's the final fight for Pastel's arcade mode - I imagine it'd be vice versa for Elaine), but in that footage she's in her alternate costume. It also took a while for that footage to get dug up...

So yeah. Here's some short footage of Elaine. You'll notice the graphics look a bit weird - to put it nicely, M2 emulation in MAME is nowhere near done. In addition to all the bugged graphics, I had to play this footage at like, 3 frames per second, using MAME's aviwrite function - rather than just recording the window, this writes each frame to an AVI file, meaning it represents how it *should* run. I doubt M2 emulation will come along for a loooooooong time, as it was only added last year and to be blunt there's not much interest in the games on offer from it. But even if it's virtually unplayable, it's cool to have access to a gaming mystery I've wanted to properly unearth for a while.

Special mention goes to The Most Powerful Gaming Site, Gaming Hell, who's fantastic Guest Characters page brought Battle Tryst and its cameos to my attention in the first place. Check em out at http://gaminghell.co.uk/ .
