A demonstration of the Battlefield 3 "Going Hunting" mission, using only the aircraft's cannon (or "guns"). The idea stemmed from the fact that I had not previously made a kill with the cannon, yet I figured it must be possible else it would surely not have been included. After interspersing cannon bursts with missiles I finally made my first kill, and then began to wonder if the air-to-air section of the mission could be completed using only the cannon. It turns out it can, and with a few quick searches I couldn't find anyone that had produced a video with "guns" only, so I decided to record my own.

I've cut the opening scene and the strike part of the mission out, because obviously you can only use the cannon during the air-to-air sequence, and there are already many videos displaying the mission in its entirety. As for tactics, the cannon fires forward from a fixed position, so you'll want to try and shoot whilst enemy aircraft are directly in front of you, or look to be crossing ahead of you. Shots seem to have a wide, random spread, so it's rather hit-and-miss, and over the few runs I've made I'm not sure I've taken down an enemy at the same spot twice. The best advice I can offer would be to shoot in short bursts, as long bursts seem to end automatically and force a cool-off period before you're able to fire again.


As usual I recorded this video with Fraps, and edited with Windows Live Movie Maker.
I had to record at 1280x720 in the end, as although I can run over 60 FPS at 1920x1080 during a normal game, whatever settings I chose yielded 40 FPS or lower whilst recording, causing some strange juddering. Having been recorded at 60 FPS the results are a lot smoother, which I prefer even against the loss of resolution. There are still some odd juddering moments, especially at 7:00 where my wingman appears to warp back and forth a bit, and there are also weird colour artefacts at 9:50, neither of which I've noticed whilst I've not been recording.
