BattleGroupVR - VR Gameplay Valve Index
Well, sh*t. I just realized the Steam VR window was on the screen the whole time. I suck. I apologize. I'm not sure how it got on the main window as it's never on that window... Oh well. I didn't want to try and redo and fake the first impressions so I'm just rolling with it. Try to pretend it's not there or just roast me in the comments...
To the game!
I loved it. Lot's of game modes. Good graphics and passable voice acting.
I love story in my games. The Campaign seems interesting and I'd love to play more of it. The Conquest game mode also looks interesting and I'd like to do another video on just that mode. Multiplayer seems like it might be lacking in population but I think most MP would happen in Conquest anyway unless you're playing specificaly with a friend. The Scirmish mode could be a bit simpler to setup but was an interesting bout of insanity. Thre are a lot of options here for an Early Access title.
Being an Early Access game there are a few bumps in the road but honestly there were very few. Some textures not loading correctly was probably the most visible and hey, if Cyberpunk can get away with it, so can a passion project Early Access title...
Still, graphically the game did not dissappoint. The ships looked amazing. The Main Menu lobby was great. I really felt like I was in an intense fleet vs fleet ship battle at the end. I was pretty thoroughly impressed.
The sound was passable. Not the games greatest strength with a few annoying sound effects but overall there wasn't much to complain about. The TTS computers were funny and fit in well. The voice acting was decent.
The gameplay itself was engaging when there were multiple ships. As a single ship, I could see that getting a bit stale. The fun is in the chaos. I could see myself playing the Conquest long term after finishing the campaign.
Things I'd like to see.
Better steering of the ship.
The overall controlls could be tightened up. Seconds matter in these games being able to accurately lock onto targets or issue orders needs to be buttery smooth. A few times too often I found myself struggling to make a selection via pointing at a target.
A tutorial for the voice commands.
A slight revamp of the existing tutorial to pause or repeat certain things if the player is struggling.
Usage of the face buttons as opposed to the thumbstick or a keymapping built into the game. Yes, there are SteamVR options available but it's better when it's baked in.
A Star Trek Bridge Crew like MP co op experience with these ships could be intriguing but that's definitely some scope creep, DLC level wishing for the future.
I definitely feel like I'll get my moneys worth out of BattleGroupVR and it delivers exactly what it promises.
