BBCPEX (RANKED) - vs Qeuce
In case you didn't notice, and have never played a BlazBlue game the green color of my username, and character name indicates that I was using "Stylish". In BlazBlue there are two base fighting styles including "Technical" which is more of a manual application, and "Stylish" which makes combos/special attacks easier to dish out. While "Stylish" is a cheap way to play you still have to apply strategy, and know how to use the character on a basic level. With that being said I don't like having to resort to using "Stylish" as I know that I'd be abusing the system with my prior knowledge of how the game works. At the end of the day I fear casual gameplay mechanics such as what "Stylish" offers are going to become so commonplace, and so commonly misused that it will eventually ruin the fighting game experience.
I have posted BlazBlue videos before where I've toppled experience BlazBlue players by using, and abusing "Stylish" online. What you have to understand is that I can play using "Technical" just fine, but that with "Stylish" at my disposal I become a fighting game god. I spoke of this very thing on one of Maximilian's (miles923) recent videos regarding Killer Instinct's new casual mechanics. Trust me when I say that having "Stylish", or anything like it available in the online modes in fighting games does more harm than good. It even existing in a game does more harm than good.
Aside from BlazBlue there are other fighting games in the works (GGXrd Revelator, SFV ...) with developers behind them who are intent on reaching out to the casual gaming community. What's wrong with this is that the casual crowd are the one's who are trolling, and abusing the system. Call of Duty is a good example of this. If developers continue to reach out to the casual crowd, especially in the competitive online scene they will seal their fate, and lose the faith of the original fighting game community that made the genre so great. Back in the day, at the dawn of fighting games players had to learn the mechanics, and learn the characters. That's what made the tournament pro's you see today as good as they are. Making fighting game characters easy to use, and abuse is not the answer to a better fighting game experience. I don't care what anyone says.
The reason I believe developers, and publishers are pushing to pacify & satisfy the casual crowd is, because of the money making potential. They see those CoD day one sales numbers, and think "I want a piece of that pie!". At the same time they don't think about the outcome of implementing such casual friendly features. They fail to see that the casual crowd are the ones pirating their games, modding their games, and ruining the experience for legit gamers who dare to try to master said games. The truth is that hardcore gamers are few, and far between these days. Their numbers in sales don't make the developers/publishers the profit they seek, unfortunately. With the hype surrounding tournament scenes such as EVO though I feel there's enough coverage to attract a good enough crowd without applying casual friendly nonsense. Players should be hyped up enough about the tournaments that they want to put in the time & practice to become just as great as their tournament heroes/heroines.
If you are a casual gamer I urge you to invest the time in actually learning a game. It'll make you look way more cooler than abusing things online for the sh*ts & giggles. How do you think fighting game champs like Deigo got in the limelight? They didn't use "Stylish", I can promise you that. Put in the time & effort, and one day you could be the next big player to enter the fighting game tournament scene.
As far as the developers, and publishers go, don't sacrifice what the genre stands for just to make it big in sales. Day one sales, while good don't mean your game won't sell well in the long haul if you don't make your mark on launch. Cut the casual crap, and make the games inviting by making them balanced, fun, and inviting. It can be done.
