A reference experience is an experience you go through that ends up changing your life and your perception of things.

Take the example of a vacuum cleaner seller.

he knocks door to door hoping that he is able to sell one vacuum cleaner.

He knocks once... No sales.

He knocks twice... No sales...

He knocks ten times... No sales.

Then, at the 100th time he knocks a door, he is able to make a sale. Suddenly his perspective changes. That is his first reference experience.

Once he understands and that he is able to make that first sale, he knows that he can do others.
