Before Power Rangers Took Over, There Was Space Sheriff Shaider
Long before Power Rangers became a global phenomenon, Japanese television was already serving up high-octane, color-suited action. One standout was Space Sheriff Shaider, a hidden gem from the early '80s that looked like it could’ve stepped right out of the Power Rangers universe.
Part of the larger Metal Hero series, Space Sheriff Shaider followed Deniga, a young Earth-born sheriff who becomes the third Space Sheriff tasked with defending the galaxy from the evil space crime syndicate Ma Do. Alongside sister series like Space Sheriff Gavin and Space Sheriff Sharivan, Shaider delivered dazzling sci-fi action, shiny metal suits, and explosive battles that rivaled anything American TV was producing at the time.
Running from 1982 to 1985, Space Sheriff Shaider didn’t have a long lifespan, but it definitely left its mark. For fans of retro tokusatsu shows, this series is a time capsule of peak Japanese action TV—and a reminder that before the West caught on, Japan had already mastered the genre.
