The Hilarious Step Brothers Scene That Was Completely Improvised
Itâs been 16 years since Step Brothers hit theaters, but fans are still discovering hidden gems behind the making of the comedy classicâincluding the fact that one of its funniest scenes wasnât even in the script.
The moment in question features Richard Jenkins, who plays Brennanâs dad, recalling a bizarre childhood dream: âWhen I was a little boy, I always wanted to be a dinosaur⌠a Tyrannosaurus rex.â With his arms tucked in and roaring around the backyard, the monologue is absurd, heartfelt, and totally unforgettable.
But as Jenkins later revealed on The Rich Eisen Show, none of it was planned.
He shared that director Adam McKay came up to him at the Catalina Wine Mixer shoot and said, âGo tell Will and John you wanted to be a dinosaur when you were young.â Confused, Jenkins asked, âWhat the hell are you talking about?â But McKay insisted, and Jenkins ran with itâimprovising the entire scene while Ferrell and Reilly reacted in real time.
Thinking it wouldnât make the final cut, Jenkins walked away assuming it was just a throwaway take. But McKay had other plans. âOh yes, it will,â the director promisedâand sure enough, it became one of the filmâs most iconic moments.
Sometimes, the best comedy really is unscripted.
