In this beginners guide tutorial for fresh spawns in DayZ, I discuss the places where you are guaranteed to find food, and that is underneath the fruit trees.
You might not see any fruit the first time you look, but if you search the surrounding buildings for other loot, you may find that with a second look, your character will find Apples, Pears and Plums.
Raw & Dried fruit is OK to eat, but avoid rotten fruit.
I've included some links so you can identify and see what the fruit trees look like, but a good rule of thumb is that the trees in the back gardens and back yards or most houses are fruit trees - and there's also the larger orchards, with the trees arranged grid fashion.
This should help you gather enough food so that you can safely loot for that all important weapon so that you can go hunting for Deer or Domestic Animals, and that is where the most calories and energy can be had!
Please note that fruit spawns on Chernarus, but doesn't on Livonia at the time of making this video.
