I recently bought a Wii U to softmod (finally). Though more expensive than some of the other consoles I have played around with modding, the Wii U has some unique benefits. In this video, I talk about how I bought one on the cheap, what components you need, and the basics of modding it.

Every current version of the Wii U can be modded, so you will not have to worry about what firmware the console is on when you buy it (As of 8/26/19)
