I will show you how cogs can be used. The Big Cog will make the same amount of rotations per minute (rpm) as the smaller cog, but since the radius is bigger the teeth have to rotate with a faster speed to reach that rpm. Therefore you can put a small cog on that big cog to make the small cog rotate slower, do it the other way to make it go twice as fast.
