Best Kingdom Since Sliced Bread - King of the Castle pt.3 (2023-04-16)
1I ended up settling on the Chiefs for my honor guard - they'll surely be a great choice with their stout, hardy nature.
After some more time settling into my kingly duties, I'm confronted by the Queen Mother who pushes me to find an heir. Tristan's not picky and is mostly concerned with tending to his kingdom, so Queen Mother will figure something out and get back to me.
Speaking of tending to the kingdom, it turns out those trees are back to cause trouble. Since it was the Counts' fault in the first place, they can try their luck. Unsurprisingly they're immediately decimated and forced to flee, with the nearby peasants not far behind. The trees then continue to rampage through the north, decimating everything in their path, especially much of the remaining stats for the Chiefs.
Eventually the trees settle down into a grove protected by saplings crafted from some of the people they've killed. While the more ideal solution would be to figure out a way to end the trees, the best we can do is to forbid anyone from bothering with the grove and hope the trees are content with being left alone.
The avalanche from earlier uncovered a mysterious tomb, and the initial group who went in to survey the didn't return. Against my better judgement, the council votes to send people from the North to investigate - led by a renowned warrior named Hrothvir.
In the mean time, Queen Mother returns with a selection of potential spouses. The Northern option, a supposedly financially savvy go-getter named Heth, seems like the overall best choice, so she'll be Queen.
Hrothvir soon returns with an army of ice warriors and apparently has plans to replace Tristan as king. That simply will not do, so I have an assassin sent out to put him down. Unfortunately, despite a successful assassination, the ice warriors are quite upset, and rampage across the countryside, further decimating the North. Our initial attempts to stop them fail miserably, and the ice warriors eventually claim a nearby mountain fortress and settle in.
The North is in terrible state - zero farming means outright famine. I can't let this happen, so Tristan decides to head out and personally distribute bread to feed the hungry masses. Unfortunately, the peasants are a little desperate and the honor guard (warriors from the Northern Chiefs) react with extreme prejudice. Tons of innocent people are killed and the honor guard have to be sacked.
All regions are quite upset at this point, and now can elect to rebel. This would be a good choice if they weren't also nearing completion for their schemes. So my monarchy is looking pretty grim - I'll not only need to somehow stop everyone from trying to take over, but somehow speed up my own path to victory.
