I am a huge fan of Payday 2, so naturally I jumped at the chance to play the beta of RAID: World War II, the spiritual sequel to the infamous heist simulator by Overkill Software. RAID looks and feels a lot like Payday, being built on the same game engine and developed by the studio Lion Game Lion, which was also involved in some of the later DLCs for Payday. But look and feel is about as far as the similarities go at this stage. No civilians means that the missions feel very combat heavy and they do not have the depth of the heists of old. Not having perk decks and a massively simplified gun customisation system add to the feeling that RAID: WW2 will not be able to recapture the aspects of Payday 2 that made the game great. The final nail in the coffin for me is the music. Don't get me wrong, the orchestral scores used in the RAID are pretty good and would not be out of place in a AAA cinema production. But they are also rather forgettable, whereas the epic music in Payday 2 was a standout feature of the game.

At this stage in the game's development, RAID: WW2 sadly doesn't feel like a worthy successor to Payday but more like a simple, four player co-op shooter with outdated graphics. None of the features that made Payday great have been recreated in RIAD (yet) but it is fair to say that Payday grew immensely over time and maybe RAID will do the same.
