This is all done with one PF particle system, with many events linked to each other.

How To:
The projectiles shoot out (instanced geometry - a bullet model), they leave a fire and smoke trail, find a target (one of the spheres), die when they hit it (delete event) and break into instanced pieces (spawn other particles). At the same time they create a few facing particles which grow then disappear gradually (they have a simple procedural texture and radial transparency with some noise).

This is just a test but it can be used for anything. With good models, lighting and better explosions, it can give a very nice effect, all while using just one PFlow particle system in 3DS Max.
