I'm a sucker for character-driven fiction. I fall firmly into the camp that a story isn't a story per se, but more a natural result of the characters within it.
The stronger, more well-defined, and justifiably complex the characters are, the more an audience can understand and empathize with their point of view, and hence, a story naturally crystallizes around these elements.
Many times, a movie or TV show gets this backwards. You have to present people with strengths, show them using those strengths to great effect, and weaknesses – not moderate disadvantages, but real, palpable weaknesses with consequences.
A good story becomes a great one when you have that framework to build upon.
