When starting a new game of The Binding of Isaac Rebirth - The game will automatically generate a seed, unless you have manually input one yourself. There are normal seeds and SPECIAL seeds which will apply a certain effect to your game. Many of which range from awesome to straight up bizarre.
What?
Seeds, essentially random strings of characters, are used as the basis for all decision making in the game. By inputting a seed manually, you can guarantee that most randomly-generated decisions will occur the same every time. For instance, two players using the same seed will find the same items in the same locations.
Why?
Seeds are very handy for a multitude of reasons. - Say you have found an item on the wiki and it has the seed linked, that you want to test , or even you have a really sweet arsenal of items that give you a real handicap with a character you are learning to master - Inputting seeds can be the difference, between a speed run, to clobbering time.
Although, inputting any seed, even a special seed, causes the 'no trophies' mark to appear, meaning that achievements can't be obtained from that run. Special seeds appear to not actually guarantee that you get a specific layout however have special properties when input into the game.
Some notable special seeds are:
FEAR M1NT - All enemies have permanent fear effect.
T0PHEAVY - Isaac's head is large
HARTBEAT - The lower your health is, the slower the music is.
DYSLEXIC - Ingame text is rearranged as though the character has trouble reading/speaking.
And that’s just to name a few!
Where/When?
To input a seed you must press tab at the character select screen to input a code. You can view a seed you are currently in via the pause menu on the left - you can note down a favorable seed for later use from here as well.
