Bishop Eddie Long is the pastor of one of the largest churches in the Southeastern United States, the 30,000-member New Birth Missionary Baptist Church just outside of Atlanta. On September 21, 2010, two men filed a civil lawsuit against Long, accusing him of abusing his power and seducing them into having a sexual relationship with him. An attorney for Bishop Long, Craig Gillen, says his client "categorically denies the allegations."
In a lawsuit filed on September 21, 2010, the two men claim Long "seduced" them by offering them "lavish gifts," including money, clothes, trips and cars, in exchange for sexual favors. At the time of the alleged sexual abuse, the two men were 17 and 18 years old. Today, they are 20 and 21 years old. The ''New York Daily News'' says because of the plaintiff's status as minors when the alleged abuse took place, their names are "being withheld."
Long's attorney told an Atlanta TV station that the accusations may be related to a June 2010 break-in at Long's church office. In an interview with CNN, a spokesperson for Long said the lawsuit is "a case of retaliation and a shakedown for money by men with some serious credibility issues." An attorney for the two men, BJ Bernstein, says says one of the men "is facing a criminal burglary charge" in connection to the break-in, which she says "was a way of lashing out at Long."
Pastor Long became head of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in 1987. At the time, the church had just 150 members. Within a few years, the church's congregation grew to 8000. Today, New Birth has well over 30,000 members who attend services in a $50 million cathedral that sits on 250 acres in Lithonia, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb.
