Black Friday in 2010 means long lines, mobs of shoppers and perhaps most notably, deep discounts on must-have items for the holiday season. As shoppers brave the crowds on Friday, November 26, 2010, the day after Thanksgiving, numerous stores are expected to offer big sales for holiday shoppers.
With big deals come big competition, both between retailers and holiday shoppers. To secure a spot in line for the best items, shoppers have been known to arrive at stores as early as 12 hours before sales begin. Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy are among the top stores for Black Friday sales, with each retailer generally offering massive savings on top gifts like LCD televisions, computers, electronics and video game systems.
While the shopping day has been synonymous with both deep discounts and long lines, Black Friday does not have to be as dark and scary as the name implies. Planning ahead is a key step in making the process painless.
MSNBC contributor Laura T. Coffey recommends researching deals ahead of time to create a plan of attack. Black Friday sale ads are released as early as two weeks before the event, which allows shoppers to learn when stores open, what time sales end, how many of each item are available at each store and how discounts from store to store compare to one another.
Kelli B. Grant from SmartMoney.com reminds customers to stay safe when shopping on Black Friday, especially as the holiday shopping season is a peak time for identity theft. Carrying only the payment methods you plan to use, only giving out only as much personal information as absolutely required and shielding things like credit cards and check books from prying eyes are all recommended to keep personal information safe when shopping.
A variety of online merchants offer deep discounts on their products during the Black Friday weekend, with big sales and special deals available on the Monday after Thanksgiving, also known as Cyber Monday.
