Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game developed and published by Game Science. It was released worldwide for PlayStation 5 and Windows on August 20, 2024, with an Xbox Series X/S version slated for a later date. The game is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. The protagonist is a monkey based on Sun Wukong from the novel.
The game is reportedly the first installment in a planned Black Myth series, which will explore different stories in Chinese mythology. The game received generally positive reviews from critics with praise directed toward its combat, visual design, and worldbuilding, while criticism was aimed at its level design and technical issues.
Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game. There was a lot of debate about whether it was a soulslike during its pre-release, even though Game Science does not consider it as a soulslike. Several reviewers who played the game commented that, although the game and soulslike games share a few elements, it does not properly fall under that subgenre. It is played in single-player mode with a third-person view. It is inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West.
The player controls a monkey protagonist referred to as the Destined One, who is based on Sun Wukong from the novel. The protagonist's weapon is a staff, based on the Ruyi Jingu Bang from the novel. The staff is able to extend and shrink its size. The combat involves three staff stances, which are the smash stance, the pillar stance, and the thrust stance. They provide versatility in the manner of attacks. There is focus, which accumulates by landing light attacks, executing well-timed dodges, and other means. A focus point is gained when the meter for focus is filled up. These points can be used to initiate a varied combo, which takes place during light attacks, or to charge a heavy attack on its own. Stamina depletes by sprinting, dodging, and attacking.
Spells are available on cooldown and consume mana. Each spell can be equipped in one of four slots.
The protagonist has transformations to shapeshift into a different creature or being. They are considered spells. They are available on cooldown, but do not cost mana. One of the transformations called the Red Tides takes the form of Guangzhi, a wolfman who wields a flaming glaive.[6] The transformations come with their own moveset and health. They last until their might, which depletes by attacking, or health runs out.[
