Black Myth Wukong Official Gameplay Trailer
3An intriguing new game titled Black Myth: Wu Kong has just been unveiled earlier this week, and the internet already can’t get enough of it. Developed by the up and coming Game Science Studio, who previously worked on the warmly-received real-time strategy game Art of War: Ride Tides, this Dark Souls-style action RPG takes its story and aesthetics from the classic Chinese novel Journey To The West.
Published way back in the 16th century, Journey To The West is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential Chinese works of all time. Believed to have been written by the Ming Dynasty author Wu Cheng'en, it tells the story of the Monkey King Sun Wukong as he journeys across the land to learn humility and retrieve the ancient writings of the Buddha himself. The story would spawn countless translations and retellings over the centuries in the form of various television adaptations, serve as the inspiration for Son Goku of the classic anime Dragon Ball as well as numerous video games like Ninja Theory's poor-selling yet well-received 2010 action title Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.
So far, Game Science Studios have not yet given any indication as to when Black Myth: Wu Kong will be set to release, as the team working on it is relatively small. In fact, yesterday’s video was more of a tech demo or recruiting tool for the studio than anything, but it has reassured potential fans that the game will be available on all platforms when it does finally launch, including PC.
Judging from Black Myth: Wu Kong’s impressive first trailer, it’s easy to see why people are already excited at the possibility of playing it in the future. The graphics are well-detailed for a pre-alpha build from a small, relatively unknown development team, the combat looks fast-paced and fluid, and the themes of Journey To The West provide plenty of opportunity for great storytelling. Hopefully, the wait won’t be too long, as Black Myth: Wu Kong has the potential to be one of the next console generation's first indie hits.
