This is part 1 of my Blood II: The Chosen playthrough.

As mentioned in the title card, Blood 2 is a bit of a mess. It was rushed out by GT without allowing Monolith to make tweaks and tidy things up. Consequently we have a game with multiple standout flaws.

Where to start? Well, the combat RNG perhaps stands out the most. I don't know if there is a huge range in the enemy HP, or huge range in the damage output of player weapons, or both. Suffice to say that the very first enemy in the game might take eight bullets to the face before dropping... or just one.
In terms of difficulty, the easy skill (Genocide) is ridiculously easy, but then the medium skill (Homicide) can be incredibly difficult against anything more than low-level enemies (and even some of them take a lot to put down), and as for the hard skill (Suicide)... forget it.
Show a tiny sliver of yourself around a corner, and a hitscan enemy will hit you in a nanosecond. Explosive splash damage goes through walls. Whole areas are reused and repopulated. It feels unfinished... and that's probably because it is.

but...

I still like it. Nostalgia probably plays a big part, but I still think it looks good on the whole (for the time) and apart from the constant shouting of certain phrases by some enemies, I really like the sound design and music.
I mentioned nostalgia because as a latecomer to the PC (for various reasons) I missed a lot of great games from the early 90s all the way up to around 1998 (most of which I have played since). One of those games was Blood. I wasn't even aware of it, and one day I came across Blood 2 in a game store. This must have been around '99 and it was on sale. I loved the cover art, and it looked good from the screenshots. I had no clue about it, but it was cheap so I bought it. Playing it again reminds me of that time.
So yes... I played Blood 2 before Blood.
