Sonic may have actually gotten faster over time.
Ever wondered how Sonic is able to go from Simply running really fast, to homing attacks, to boosting? I theorize this might be a side effect after becoming Super Sonic and the resulting energy transfer the Chaos Emeralds give to him. Think of it like the Zenkai Boost from Dragon Ball Z, for every time he becomes super, he gains a bit more speed. This could possibly explain the resulting aura only gives off while boosting and how he was able to take down Perfect Chaos in his base form.
