277A playthrough of NEC's 1991 puzzle-action game for the TurboGrafx-16, Bomberman.
Bomberman for the TurboGrafx-16 (known as Dyna Blaster in Europe) served as something of a soft reboot for the series - a "modern" reenvisioning the original game (https://youtu.be/bSGalMTxuZA ) that had become an early smash hit for Hudson on the NES. It built the foundation for Bomberman '93 (https://youtu.be/omviLzqX-Dk ) and Bomberman '94 (https://youtu.be/pSXTiVhqusA ), as well as for the parallel SNES series that began with 1993's Super Bomberman (https://youtu.be/9-E4u4fIsi0 ).
It's very similar to the NES games. You still blast through a maze, wiping out all of the roaming monsters while powering yourself up, but it has seen some important improvements. The 16-bit facelift is phenomenal. The themed worlds, cutesy sprites, and the boss battles all establish standards that we'd see in later titles (like the classic Saturn Bomberman: https://youtu.be/eJornSIIM6Q ). Perhaps most importantly, it is this version of Bomberman that cements the series' legacy as a multi-player powerhouse. Not only was it the first game to support more than a single player, but it features full support for the Turbo's 5-player multitap and the Turbo Express's link cable, making this game the birthplace of both "battle mode" and the series as it's generally regarded today.
If you were a fan of the Bomberman series and haven't yet played this one, do yourself a favor and try it out. It lacks some of that flash of the later games, but there's no denying just how much this one embraces the heart of the entire franchise.
