Bonaventure Cemetery is located in Savannah, Georgia located on the Bluff of Wilmington River. The lush green vegetation, Spanish moss draped from trees, make this one of the most majestic cemeteries in the world; the creative design of some of the tombstones, however, is what gives the cemetery its uniqueness. I never thought I’d use the word majestic in the same paragraph with cemetery. It has always and still is thought of a place of sadness, mourning, and to some, maybe many, a place of haunts. There are a number of ghostly experiences reported from Bonaventure, but none I can conclude on being real or not. The haunting of Gracie is the most popular ghost story. I visited during a weekday in September when the place was not flooded with tourists, but the sunlight didn’t take away from the gothic appeal and hauntingly beautiful landscape It is MASSIVE. It requires driving in and probably driving around to observe more quickly. However, some graves require walking and if you have the time and don’t mind spending the energy or have it to spend, I recommend parking and hiking through Bonaventure. It is fun and intriguing to explore. Take water, take a camera, maybe a snack, a watch, a camera, and most importantly respect for the departed and their families. There are guided tours, but I suggest going alone or with people outside of the tour with a map you grab at the front lobby. If you do hear or see a spirit, give her/him space and record it.
