Boneworks VR game review
Bone works is a VR game on steam that pushes the limits of VR. I’ve played through the whole game on the rift s as well as the quest 2 with oculus link and virtual desktop I played about 90% with virtual Desktop
You play a character inside Myth os and operating system where something has gone wrong. The story had a cool concept but there isn’t much more too it.
The whole game involves using realistic guns and a complicated physics. There is this whole layer of objects that are heavier being harder to pick up and move. Although I generally found it to be not the case.
You play as Arthur Ford you are the head of security at Monogon. The story is sort of told through TV’s and writing on the wall with things like “down with monogon”
Positives
Pushes VR forward in a way that no other game has done before it. The gun mechanics and physics are some of the best ive ever played in vr. Especially the reloading and telekinesis work better than any other game I’ve played. The telekinesis just feels so natural so does reloading and clearing it. I had a lot of fun learning new tricks my favorite one was throwing a mag out taking one out then using telekinesis to catch it back and reload the gun.
Sandbox
There are almost always multiple ways of solving puzzles and going about the mission. I never felt like I was in a box or the puzzle was too difficult I think they found a really good balance between puzzles and action gameplay. At it’s core this is a puzzle action story rpg.
AI
At some moments in the game the AI was just incredible. Very aggressive and hard to predict especially the orange guys on wheels towards the end. But there were a lot of moments where they were just mindless walking towards you and they were super easy to defeat. There was never really a moment where I felt overwhelmed or that I couldn’t beat them.
No compromises
This doesn’t do teleporter movement. At first I hated it but now I love it. It get’s you used to locomotion. When I first started
Negatives
Saving system is not good. After climbing for 20 minutes, you have to do it all again. Closes I’ve come to throwing my vr headset at the computer. Especially when it’s the mechanics and not your fault. It’s annoying in that sense that sometimes it’s more a battle with the controls then the actual enemies or ai.
Technology
Probably more an issue of the device I was playing on the quest 2. Im sure it’s way better on the index with the finger tracking but on the quest things just didn’t feel like they should. Parts felt clunky.
Virtual body
- Climbing it’s hard to get your body to do the right thing. Simple things like climbing up become nightmarishly annoying tasks.
U.I.
Kept accidentally taking things out and taking ammo out accidentally although the ui in general was really good. It was held back in some ways it felt like there was something everywhere I was always taking out or putting in. There is a noise when you take things out but it’s too light. Pressing a and then viewing the ui was too man steps. It should just be when you press a button you can see the whole ui. That would have been a grea addition although I mostly got used to it accidentally taking out ammo happened all the time.
Aiming.
It was so annoying trying to aim was easier to just hip fire and adjust based on your missing. The laser sight helped but aiming with 1 eye just wasn’t worth it.
Jumping
Delayed didn’t work like it should I have great difficulty with this.
Overall you should play this game it pushed the medium forward in ways I didn’t even thing possible and I can’t wait to see what stress level 0 make next!
