Book Discussion 17: Fool's Gold, Part 2 - Wild Magic by Jude Fisher
From what I can best recall about this middle book in the trilogy, it ramped up the depravity of the antagonists, which heightened the stakes and built up the conflict. Since the antagonists' actions were not overblown the tension felt appropriate, especially since the protagonists were progressing with their goals and making reasonable strides themselves. However, the female lead, doesn't develop her magical abilities as much as I was expecting from the first book, which does impact the story overall and where it winds up going in the last book. I do believe that it was this mistake and others like it that hurt the overall story, unfortunately.
Funny enough, the middle book is the one with the best reviews out of the trilogy. Perhaps readers thought the plot was most interesting here? Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Magic-Fools-Gold-Fisher/dp/0743440412/ref=bseries_primary_1_0743440412
