Book Discussion 17: Fool's Gold, Part 1 - Sorcery Rising by Jude Fisher
I'm uploading an entire trio of videos today, as I didn't want to break up a book discussion over three books across three weeks. Not that anyone would notice the week gaps in-between, but it just goes against what I would want as a viewer. Especially since my discussion looks more at the series as a whole instead of the events and writing within each book. That also explains the relatively abrupt ends for each section.
This first book in the series was one that I thought did a good job introducing the main characters, as the writing style takes up the perspectives of a handful of people. I remember looking forward to what would be coming next and where the story was going. I would mention that as far as tone goes, this first book has the most optimism and that general sense of building adventure many fantasy stories have.
It received mixed reviews overall, but wasn't widely enjoyed. Nobody ever mentioned what I thought were obvious parallels between this fantasy world and ours, so I guess it's not disliked for being too similar or uninspired with developing made-up cultures.
