Borderline, 1981 Sega/Gremlin
Wow-- I've wanted to do this one for a long time, and now there are finally audio samples in MAME for not only this, but also Tranquilizer Gun! Maybe soon Digger..? Anyway, this is a kind of cool military-themed shooting game in which you drive a jeep through enemy strongholds, shooting enemy jeeps, weird cone-like things, and fusion symbols (?). The game plays through 4 stages: the first is a vertically scrolling area where you must avoid ramming into the walls and these white cone-like things line said walls and sometimes spring off the walls at you. Here, you can slow down by pulling back on the joystick, stay in neutral or speed up by pushing up on the joystick. Drive far enough north and you'll see a handful of enemy jeeps appear (watch out for their shots) and then 4 fusion symbols to destroy before you move to the next area. The 2nd area has you driving through dirt (ala Dig Dug) to get to the top of the screen where more fusion symbols wait to be destroyed (which advances you to the next area). Jeeps will appear and can shoot you, and will when you are in their sights; the white jeeps' shots can be cancelled by your shots and the blue jeeps have a missile that goes through YOUR shots, therefore the white ones are worth less than the blue ones-- though both their values increase after you pass all 4 levels. The 3rd level contains more jeeps, but there's no foliage/dirt to drive through, just walls and 300 point missiles. More fusion symbols wait to be destroyed to allow you passage to level 4, but make notice where the jeeps respawn from-- the white ones on the left and right and the blue ones at the top. This is especially important to know because since they shoot on sight they can respawn near you if you're not careful and blast you right away! DO NOT take on a tank in close proximity out in the open-- it's better to have a wall or foliage/dirt to protect you (though the enemies can sometimes drive through the dirt). The last area has more driveable undergrowth but also just one single fusion symbol-- this is protected by a fortress with a rotating cannon. The cannon will shoot a handful of times to the left, then down, then right, then repeat. In close proximity with the cannon YOU WILL LOSE. So you want to shoot at the fortress wall when the cannon's just moved away from your spot. You will need to fire several shots to break down the wall and take out the fusion symbol and then start all the levels over again. Note than on later go-rounds the first level has much tighter moving quarters, and the enemy jeeps increase in point value. Reasonably fun little military-themed shooter on the Vic Dual hardware by Sega/Gremlin. Again, if you're a MAME fan and like the games on the Vic Dual hardware, note that some of those games that didn't have sound samples before now do have them!
