Bore Blasters is a gem that's full of gems. The story is a bit humorous, and oddly seems to taper off once you hit 70% completion. I played for a few more hours after that and perhaps something will happen once I hit 100%, but I'm now at the "play for 10-15 minute bursts" mode. When I first played it sucked me in for 7 hours. It's incredibly addictive and satisfying to play.
You'll unlock a few dwarves that each have their own special ability, and then head down into levels to collect gems and complete the occasional quest or side quest. Gems help you "level up" essentially during your excursion, which results in selecting temporary power-ups. Any gems you earn during a level can be used on permanent upgrades that are for all 3 characters.
The gameplay is pretty simple. Fly your ship, shoot blocks, collect gems, kill enemies, reach the bottom and unlock new levels. That's the game in a nutshell. There's not a lot of strategy involved outside of choosing the right temporary upgrades as you play. There are a few story-based levels that toss a boss fight or other cool moment your way, but there are very few of those.
Graphically the game has fantastic pixel art with tons of shiny things and vibrant colors that reward you for a job well done. It's incredibly satisfying. There aren't a ton of enemies, and many look like they are just a reskin of others - but it's not something I consider as a problem.
Music and sound are great - with the music being one of the best soundtracks I've heard so far this year. It's rather exceptional.
