Boss Level - Movie Review
3"Boss Level" (2021) directed by Joe Carnahan is actually pretty decent which surprised me. However it has a truly terrible ending and I found the theme choice of video gaming to be unnecessary.
Roy (Frank Grillo) is stuck in a time loop filled with assassins trying to kill him. Every time Roy dies the loop resets. Roy's goal is to reach and kill his ex-wife Jemma (Naomi Watts)'s boss Colonel Clive Ventor (Mel Gibson) who is stationed in a highly secure facility. Roy makes the best of his curse by making up for lost time with his son.
Boss Level is a seriously stupid name for a movie but I have to admit it did work as a film. It's very funny and Mel Gibson is particularly amazing in this. The action is also surprisingly above average which helps since we rewatch the same sequences many times. This type of film really didn't need a theme or message but it does have one in being a good father and being there for your child, so while it wasn't executed perfectly due to being a lack of focus and a lack of time, I appreciated the attempt and effort none the less.
Boss Level does not have any business being a video game themed film and to me it came off as an excuse to fanboy Street Fighter. The ending of the film is one of the worst I've ever seen because it essentially ends by not ending at all, we don't know the fate of any of the characters nor if the problem is solved or not. The dialogue and jokes are generally quite funny but it featured one bad scene about Harrison Ford in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) which will now forever haunt me. Michelle Yeoh has about two or three sentences in the entire movie so putting her face on the poster was false advertising.
Boss Level should be bad but it's unfortunately not. What I mean by that is that it looks and sounds dumb in concept but in reality is actually pretty effective at what it wanted to do.
