The Big Short - Movie Review
"The Big Short" (2015) directed by Adam McKay is a financial dramedy based on real life events with some creative liberties. It tells an important history lesson about Capitalism and the U.S.A. economy while being funny and charming along the way.
Michael Burry (Christian Bale) is an eccentric Wall Street man who brilliantly predicts a major collapse in the house mortgage market and bets against it before anyone knows any better. A few others also begin to realize what's coming and they begin to eagerly invest while everyone else considers them crazy. Among these investors are Mark Baum (Steve Carell) & Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), the former of which has dedicated his life to seeking out and dismantling all forms of corruption as a means of coping with the guilt of losing his brother to suicide. The last people getting rich off of this huge financial crisis is Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt) and his two rookie accomplices.
The Big Short is an intimidating watch due to the financial jargon and sheer amount of characters and everything happening, but it's still an easy one to recommend and I highly suggest you give it a shot. As someone who has zero interest in Wall Street, stock markets, and economical issues, I found this to be an extremely interesting and gripping story that never left me bored for a minute. I was also able to understand it better due to the brilliant decision by the director to include fourth wall breaking moments which explain the complicated terminology being used every second word. We get some funny cameos to explain these terms to us which I won't spoil for you but they're extremely varied and unpredictable scenes.
The movie is really funny and I appreciated the sitcom sort of deadpan humor being used. The camera angles also add to the comedy because they will slowly zoom in on people's faces for dramatic effect and it's quite original actually. One issue I had was the fact that I could not root for anybody since at the end of the day, they are all cussing sailors who are just money hungry, meaning there is no true message or impact other than the obvious existing ones. I liked that we got to see the story from different perspectives via the all star cast, but I will mention that Brad Pitt and his two lackeys didn't really need to be here.
The Big Short is an excellent watch which I highly recommend even if you find it scary due to how technical and complicated it can seem. The film does a decent job of letting you know what is happening and it does an even better job at being funny and charming along the ride in this historically important story.
