The waiting through the first three weeks of July was worth it for Penn State football and its fans. Four-star athlete and top 100 player in the country, Liam Andrews, committed to the Nittany Lions on Friday. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the massive impact of Andrews on the Class of 2024 in today’s video. They’ll also take you through Andrews’ recruiting journey and explain what skills make him such an impressive football prospect.

Penn State lands an elusive asset
While the debate about which position Andrews should play at Penn State rages on, Fitz explains why Andrews switched his recruitment from offense to defense. He explains that being a two-way player for Dexter Southfield opened Andrews’ eyes to the excitement of defense.
“I think he got a taste for it. And sometimes, when you get sacks, when you get tackles for loss, when you feel that kind of rush, it’s a little bit different than playing on the offensive line when you don’t get recognized for that kind of stuff. So he came out of his junior season, and it seemed like he was going to be dictating which direction his recruitment went in by saying, ‘Hey, I want to be a defensive lineman,’ Fitz said.
Despite that, Fitz doesn’t think that Andrews will be stubborn about his desires if the situation doesn’t work out.
“I don’t think this is a guy that’s going into it saying, you know what, ‘If I’m not a defensive lineman, like for the entire career, I’m not going to consider you.’ I think this is a guy that he still might be open to the offensive line. I think he knows how high a ceiling is on the offensive line.”
Andrews represents a change in defensive tackle recruiting
However, T-Frank is high on Andrews as a defensive tackle. He thinks the Massachusetts native is what Penn State needs to take the next step on the defensive line. Offensive tackle is still a higher priority, but Andrews might have too much success to make the change.
“When you look at Andrews, I think he’s going to have so much success at defensive tackle that I don’t know you’re going to move him. You look at what he brings to the table; length, those massive 33-plus inch arms, great hands, size, athleticism off the ball, great first step, and explosive movement skills.
There’s nothing he’s really lacking regarding tools you would want to have at the position. Maybe he’s a little bit more consistent pad level, but I’m not concerned about that when you’re an unblockable defensive lineman, which is what you saw a lot on film.”
Penn State has 23 commits in the Class of 2024, and BWI recruiting expert Ryan Snyder thinks the class can add about five more players before the end of the cycle.
