Artist’s Statement and an Explanation of the Project

This Brickfilm production will take the extremely well-known works created by Star Wars and Disney, and transform them into an Epic Theatre representation. Within our modern world, we as people communicate with words. Now the question at hand is, does animation communicate with people to the extent that live action does? Our artwork will take you into the animated world of Lego in the hopes of creating a critical view of Bertolt Brecht's theories of distance and alienation, and combine them with animation. The purpose of this is to provide the viewer with an understanding for critical thinking. Here we will deconstruct the epic formation of Star Wars and Disney and imprint the viewer into the life of these Lego Mini Figures. For the most part, films do not like to make it obvious that they are films. They do not want you to know that they are a construction, and not real life. They try to make the cuts and effects invisible to anyone who is not intentionally seeking them out. However, the combination of alienation and animation will prove to make the invisible, visible. The storyline behind our Star Wars Brickfilm provides this notion; with the utilization of a hero, Kylo Ren, who will take you on a behind the scenes adventure. Mr. Ren showcases to you the making of the latest Star Wars film The Force Awakens (2015) and some scenes from previous installments with new twists. We are relying on the fact that these are two well established companies, with well sought out films which we believe can be broken down in a comedic way to reflect critical engagement. Furthermore, our choice to do stop motion was inspired by the installment of the Lego movie and Lego video games. We as viewers, see animation as live action even though that is truly not the case. You, as the audience member, will find yourself entertained but also distant as you will become self aware that this is a film and overall to think of the situations that the character is in. This project has been grounded to reflect a combination of Brechtian traits and animation.
