Bridging art and architecture, Christian Moeller's work explores how emergent digital media have transformed our landscapes of experience across multiple scales, from the fleeting granular image to the topology of cities. Moeller analyzes a site (a moment, a site, a city, a surface, an image) not as a static form, but as a system in flux. Instead of freezing finished works, Moeller embraces the structures of our society-in-motion and designs transient systems for the unfolding of events that re-mediate public experience. For one work, a park becomes a musical instrument, and for another, a musical instrument is seen through the virtual eyes of an insect. In a gallery, Moeller installs the sensory experience of a subway car arriving at a station and reframes it as a pure event of virtual perception and cyclical anticipation, while for another work, a real train leaving the station and the tunnel through which it accelerates is transformed for the amazed rider into an unfurled zoetrope. Moeller is in Seattle working on several projects and will be at Microsoft to show and talk about his work, as well as describe the program he runs at UCLA.
