Golly! Ghost! 2 (Arcade, 1992)

Now this one is a lot different. Golly! Ghost! 2 was developed by Namco as a light gun shooting game. What made it unique is that it wasn’t just a video game on a screen — it used a mechanical diorama inside the cabinet. When you looked into the machine, you saw little ghost characters projected into a 3D miniature house setting.

Players used mounted light guns to shoot the ghosts as they popped up in different rooms of the diorama. It was colorful, cartoony, and very different from the darker gun games of the time (Operation Wolf, Lethal Enforcers). Instead of realism, it aimed for humor and fun, with silly ghost designs and exaggerated reactions when you shot them.

This gave it a sort of “toy-like” charm — almost like shooting targets at a carnival, but with animated ghosts. Because of its mechanical setup, though, it wasn’t as widely distributed as regular video arcade games, so many people only saw it in certain arcades or family entertainment centers.
