So what the hell even is this video?

Well, I wanted to try Vtubing, but I don’t have access to an animated character model, motion tracking software or even a webcam. I chose the most convoluted and time-consuming alternative: drawing a bunch of individual character reactions and manually editing them into a gaming video to match my commentary!

This was originally intended to be a quick experimental video to test if any of this was even doable, which is why I’m just playing a random part of Black Mesa. The more time I put into it, the more invested I became in it actually turning out decent, which meant I kept putting even more time into it, haha.

The entire process involved drawing and coloring a heap of character reactions, experimenting with different video capture settings, trying and learning the basics of three different video editing programs, and then manually editing several hundred reaction images in the proper place. I have SOME experience with editing and a bit more with drawing, but I also had to learn a lot during the entire process.

Some issues I’m aware of in the finished video: Game audio is too loud. The character stills need some cleanup. Editing looks choppy in some places, etc.

If you watched the video, please leave a comment to let me know what you thought so I know if it’s worth making more of these! I’ll probably make a few more just because it would feel like such a waste to spend all this time on the art assets and only use them for one video, but I might do less or more depending on the response.

Either way, hope you enjoyed the video and thank you for taking the time to check it out!
