machinery is quite fickle, and breaks if even ONE thing is wrong.
disabling gears does seem to cause strange issues.
When you un-pause the game some hanging machines will break if disabled gears are attached to hanging machines

One thing you can do is use two gears. A second gear next to it is lever-controlled to let you switch it on and off without collapsing the stack.
