From my recollection, this game has always been perceived as a knock-off of Knockout 2, an Amiga Public Domain game. However, in my view, it merely draws inspiration from it rather than being an outright imitation as some critics suggest. I also notice influences from Car Jamboree, an arcade game from the 1980s, alongside unique contributions from its developers.
Although the objective in all three games is to eliminate other vehicles, the methods vary: Knockout 2 limits players to pushing opponents off the track, "Car Jamboree" involves ramming into the sides of cars to destroy them, whereas Burnout allows for both tactics and - unlike CJ - introduces head-on collisions where damage is mutual, as well as the option to upgrade your car or acquire special equipment or weapons from the shop. Additionally, the Vulcan Software release includes bonus stages, reminiscent of those in Car Jamboree, a feature absent in Knockout 2.
Despite not being heralded as a classic, Burnout has, in my opinion, been unfairly criticized. Engaging with the game on its highest difficulty settings, as I have done, introduces a heightened level of complexity. This is seen through AI opponents that, while not infallible, often operate near their maximum capabilities, alongside the introduction of novel and demanding tracks.
These elements necessitate a blend of creative strategizing, keen reflexes, and meticulous driving skills. Regardless of occasional lapses in AI performance, the overall challenge presented requires a balanced approach to both strategy and skill, whether lying in wait or charging directly at adversaries. It aptly demonstrates the adage, "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."
In conclusion, Burnout is an enjoyable game that has suffered from undue negative assessments. I question whether its harshest critics have truly experienced the game at its most challenging settings.
