Skype is shutting down. May 5th, 2025, was the official end date for Skype.
Microsoft, who owns Skype, is retiring the service to focus on Microsoft Teams. Here's why:
Streamlining Services: Microsoft wants to simplify its communication offerings. Instead of maintaining two separate platforms (Skype and Teams), they are concentrating their efforts on one.
Focus on Microsoft Teams: Teams has become Microsoft's primary platform for communication and collaboration, offering a wider range of features beyond just calls and chats, including file sharing and integration with Microsoft 365.
Shifting User Preferences: Over the years, Skype's popularity has declined as other platforms like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Microsoft's own Teams gained traction.
Modern Features: Teams offers more modern features and capabilities that cater to current user needs.
What this means for you:
You can still log in to Teams with your Skype credentials, and your contacts and chats should automatically appear.
If you don't want to use Teams, you can export your Skype data until January 2026. After that, it will be permanently deleted.
If you had a Skype Number or a calling subscription, it stopped automatically renewing on April 3rd, 2025.
If you still have Skype Credit, you can access the Skype dial pad from the web portal or Teams to make calls.
Skype Numbers will continue to receive calls until the subscription expires, but you'll need to use Teams or keep the Skype dial pad open on the web portal.
Microsoft encourages users to transition to Teams for their communication needs.
