Gaming as a Guide to the Past Environments: A Gentle Assistance to Landscape Archaeology in Palaepaphos, Cyprus

This presentation aims to present the way that gaming could help a researcher, or a student complete his research. During my master’s thesis, I did a spatial analysis of the site of Palaepaphos in western Cyprus from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Roman Period. One of the many questions I had to answer is the reason why people chose Palaepaphos as the exact site to establish their long-live settlement. Strategy games like Age of Empires II, made me understand that certain demands have to be fulfilled, while building and organizing a settlement. These demands can be separated into two different tiers. The basic tier is the one that ensures the survival of the population. This tier includes sufficient water and food resources. The second tier includes tributary -although basic- advantages, such as the existence of natural fortifications, the exploitation of minerals or other resources, and the ability to control the land and the sea, that could bring prosperity, safety, and power to the settlement.
