When I was a kid, I was so bad at this game that sometimes this would be the only way for me to survive - being able to pull this off. Even back then, I'd discovered the 4-2 ratio of skirmishers to legionnaires that many players today fail to utilise. I've seen serious players making 6 legionnaires and just placing them statically in a block. Better to use the 4-2 and have ballista towers add to the firepower.
The demo of this game on PC Gamer magazine was my first experience of classical antiquity, and of Rome, and of Roman legions, of Roman emperors, of Caesar, of the scutum, and the gladius, and of Hannibal, and of war elephants, and of marble construction, and of the roman pantheon (which I then learned more about in books in school, the concordance with the game was fascinating to me back then).
I took this game seriously back then, and I was still terrible at it. Despite that, some of what I did was as good as it gets (I successfully problem solved my way through many aspects of it), and this video shows one humorous example.
