Three weeks after the Normandy invasion, the US forces begin Operation Cobra, an offensive with the ultimate goal of breaking out of Normandy, supported heavily by aerial bombardment. The 1st Infantry Division is tasked with retaking the town of Marigny.

Operation Cobra was a resounding success for the Allied forces on their path to liberating France in the summer of 1944, and one of the key turning-points in the history of the Second World War
That decisive blow, known as COBRA, was largely planned by the U.S. First Army commander. Lieutenant General Omar N. Bradley flew from France to England to plead for a massive assault by heavy and medium bombers to blow a hole in the German line for ground troops to exploit.
Operation Cobra was designed to break the stalemate in Normandy by providing the Allies with the momentum to overcome the determined, but poorly organized, German resistance in Northern France.
