In the distant past, godlike beings known as the Keepers existed, living within a mysterious realm called the Ether. Among these beings were two of great significance, who would be known by many names over the ages, but most commonly as Dr. Monty and the Shadow Man. While their origins remain shrouded in mystery, what is known is that their history is intertwined with a powerful artifact called the Summoning Key. This device enabled the Keepers to manipulate the Ether and create a realm called Agartha, a dimension of perfection beyond human comprehension.

The Keepers were akin to ancient scientists, experimenting with the very fabric of reality. Their curiosity led them to discover the Dark Ether, a potent energy source lying beneath creation. Unfortunately, many of the Keepers were corrupted by the Dark Ether's power, transforming into malevolent beings known as the Apothicons, led by the Shadow Man. A great war erupted between the Apothicons and the Keepers, with Dr. Monty leading the latter. In the end, the Keepers triumphed, banishing the Apothicons to the Dark Ether. Over eons, the Apothicons evolved into twisted, monstrous creatures, driven by a single desire: to return to Agartha.

The Apothicons knew of a secret—on Earth, there was a gateway to Agartha. They sent meteors containing Element 115, a powerful substance, to various Earths across different dimensions. They believed that if humanity waged enough wars, a rift would open, allowing them to escape the Dark Ether. Eventually, this plan succeeded, and the Apothicons broke free. In response, the Keepers allied with humanity to defend the Earth, defeating the Apothicons once more. After the war, four knights wielding powerful staves, known as Primis, emerged. However, the chaotic events of the time were poorly documented, and much of the war's history was lost.

In the 1800s, Element 115 was discovered in the American West. During this time, a man named Jebediah Brown created a part of the Vril Device, an artifact capable of shaping reality. However, to complete it, he needed three components: the Vril Device, the blood of an elder god, and an elemental shard. Although he managed to create the Vril Device, he lacked the other components.

Fast forward to World War II, where the major powers—the Germans, Japanese, and Americans—discovered more deposits of Element 115. The Germans, led by Group 935 under the leadership of Dr. Maxis and Dr. Richtofen, aimed to create super soldiers and advanced weapons. Their experiments with teleportation, however, led to unintended consequences, including the creation of the first zombie. Facing financial difficulties, Dr. Maxis accepted funding from the Nazis in exchange for superweapons, while Dr. Richtofen secretly continued teleportation experiments.

In one experiment, Dr. Richtofen accidentally teleported himself to the Moon, where he encountered a Dark Ether pyramid created by the Apothicons. Upon touching it, he was electrocuted and heard voices urging him to open the pyramid. This shock also teleported him to a jungle known as Shangri-La, where he discovered the Focusing Stone, a key to Agartha. After returning to Group 935's facility, Richtofen began planning the construction of a Moon base.

Meanwhile, Dr. Maxis had a daughter named Samantha, who was neglected by her father. During one of the teleportation experiments, Richtofen teleported her to the Moon and her father to a place called the Crazy Place. On the Moon, Samantha was frightened and accidentally merged with the Ether pyramid, gaining control over the undead. Dr. Maxis, now in the Crazy Place, developed the ability to merge with electricity.

Eventually, Richtofen retrieved Maxis from the Crazy Place to convince Samantha to leave the pyramid. However, Maxis, driven mad, instructed her to kill everyone. After his death, Samantha unleashed the undead on the Moon base, resulting in a massacre. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, with a group called Ultimus—a team of test subjects, including American Tank Dempsey, Russian prisoner Nikolai Belinski, and Japanese soldier Takeo Masaki—being awakened by Richtofen to help him retrieve his diary from a location called Shinonuma.

After a successful mission, Richtofen planned to stop Samantha by traveling to the Moon. However, a malfunction in the teleporter sent Ultimus to Kino der Toten in the 1960s, where they found themselves in the midst of the Cold War. During this time, the Americans and Soviets raided Group 935's facilities, seizing their research on Element 115.
