Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person shooter game released by Activision in 2009. It was designed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in 2009. It is the sixth instalment of the Call of Duty series and a direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, with the plot continuing. The operation tracks Task Force 141, a multi-national special forces team led by Captain Soap MacTavish, as they hunt Vladimir Makarov, the Russian Ultranationalist party's chief, and US Army Rangers from the 1st Battalion/75th Ranger Regiment, who are protecting the Washington DC area from a Russian attack. Captain MacTavish, who becomes playable later in the game, is a member of the Rangers. The game has a large multiplayer mode, as well as other additional features and modes not found in its predecessor. Fast-paced gunfights against enemy combatants are central to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's gameplay.

The player controls a soldier who can leap, crawl, crouch, lie down, and fire down their gun's iron sights, among other things. Blood splatters over the player's heads-up display (HUD) as they are fired by an opponent, indicating that they have taken damage. The player's health will regenerate if they take cover to escape bullets. A compass, a mini-map, and the player's current ammunition count are among the other items shown on the HUD. Assault rifles, shotguns, pistols, and sniper rifles are among the weapons available in the game. At the start of each stage, the player will be given unique weapons, but they can swap them out for another gun they find. Attachments such as suppressors and heartbeat sensors are available for certain weapons. When confronted with a huge number of opponents, the player can use bombs and flashbangs, as well as a knife for close quarters combat. The player will be given special equipment in certain stages.
