I took terrible losses with my Companions when we tried to sneak past some Loners in the Red Forest. My Companions were five Bandits I had hired from the Dark Valley. Two more Bandits with limited dialogue, that were part of the mission to kill the Dutyers in the Dark Valley. Whether those two survived or not, was not relevant to its success or reward. The last three Companions were the three-man squad of Freedom, that I was able to hire after they turned green, when I completed their mission to kill those Bloodsuckers outside the Freedom Base.

10 Companions entered the Red Forest but only 4 made it to Forester.
